Winter in the city takes on luster and vibrancy thanks to a motley collection of Christmas markets that coexist and each have their own sound. From the glittering ice rink on Museumplein, where Ice*Village fills more than forty stalls for December, to the grandiose festivities around the RAI for whom it may be a little more spectacular. In between these two fishermen of winter fun, however, small-scale, local markets also pop up with a focus on organic, artisanal and sustainable. Together they are not a guide, but an invitation to taste and experience winter city life through these markets.

Ice*Village, with its location in the heart of the most famous museum area, has for many become synonymous with the start of the real winter feeling in the city. Here you hear winter; the crunch of skates over ice and the smell of hot chocolate and freshly baked poffertjes that meet you in the dozens of stalls along the paths. The ice rink is freely accessible, a rarity that invites you to a low-threshold winter experience, where young and old get carried away in a world of white, light and coziness.

Those who prefer an indoor and outdoor mix, where ice skating goes hand in hand with shows, carnivals and live performances, should definitely check out Winter Paradise at the RAI. Running from mid-December to early January, the event captivates audiences with a rich array of activities that offer an alternative winter experience. Children's activities and food trucks provide an all-round festive feel and something for everyone.

Further into the cityscape, small markets occupy a place of their own. For example, there are initiatives that focus on local produce and crafts, organic products or just neighborhood activities with a nod to sustainability and family fun. These markets offer a different kind of intimacy and connection, a refreshing change from the large public events. They invite you to browse, explore and find winter gifts with a story and soul.

"These markets are more than selling places; they are social gatherings that make one forget the winter cold and feel the warmth of the city."

In their diversity, the markets show something about the city itself: a place where tradition and innovation, large and small, public and intimate, go hand in hand in a festive winter time. Those who visit these places meet not only products and delicacies, but also stories, people and memories. And so each visit becomes a small celebration of togetherness in the cold season.
