The 9 Streets, the nicest shopping streets in Amsterdam

The most popular shopping area The 9 Streets can be found in the heart of the Grachtengordel, Amsterdam's world heritage site. The picturesque and photogenic streets stretch across Amsterdam's most beautiful canals. The walhalla for shopaholics is home to 250 authentic stores, special restaurants and museums.

In the 9 Streets you have a good view of the typical Amsterdam building style. After 400 years, the beautiful facades are still in very good street. As you stroll through these little streets you will see various artisanal businesses, hidden cafes, hotspot restaurants and galleries, and a wide range of specialized and unique stores. But when you first come to this shopping area, the selection can be a bit overwhelming. Luckily, we at Amsterdam Magazine do love to shop, so we've put together a great 9 Streets Shopping Guide!

The six larger streets (Reestraat, Hartenstraat, Berenstraat, Wolvenstraat, Runstraat and Huidenstraat) refer to the trade in animal skins for the leather industry. Most of the buildings date from the 17th century and are small, monumental stores. Even after 400 years, the area is still very much alive. Anyone who goes to The 9 Streets is sure to find something special, whether old or new. The funny thing is that few people - even Amsterdam residents - know the difference between the streets. More than once you'll hear, "I bought something really nice!" "Oh where?" "Um, yes ... somewhere in De 9 Straatjes."
