The Opera Circus is a performance that brings baroque music and contemporary circus together in an extraordinary way. The production honors George Frideric Handel, a key figure in Baroque music, by intertwining his dramatic compositions with circus techniques that enhance the spectacle on stage. Led by directors Serge van Veggel and Aedín Walsh, it creates a combination of classical opera and visual circus, in which the energy of the circus breathes new life into timeless music.
The performance is a joint production of OPERA2DAY and the Netherlands Bach Society, two respected cultural institutions that are touring throughout the Netherlands with this project. Soon they can be seen in major theaters such as the Royal Theater Carré and the Koninklijke Schouwburg, among others. These venues provide spatial stages on which the drama of both the musical compositions and the physical circus acts can be fully appreciated.

With Hernán Schvartzman as conductor and dramaturg Tiara Kobald, the story is carefully constructed, with the combination of music and circus enhancing the emotional experience. The setting focuses on the baroque, with costumes and scenery reflecting Handel's period, while the modern circus adds a surprising and dynamic layer. The result is a performance that appeals to both lovers of classical music and lovers of spectacle.

The show deliberately plays with contrasts: the tight, balanced sounds of baroque opera versus the playful and acrobatic elements of contemporary circus. The story takes a hopeful turn, with the arts merging in a joyous and expressive finale. This makes The Opera Circus not only a tribute to an important composer, but also an exploration of different disciplines professionally brought together on one stage.
