The Movies finally reopens after two years
After being closed for two years due to a large-scale renovation, The Movies, Amsterdam's oldest cinema, will reopen its doors on March 13.
For many Amsterdam residents, The Movies on Haarlemmerdijk is the place to go for an evening of film over a beer or wine. The classic, art-deco movie theater from 1912 has movie theaters and is famous for its programming of arthouse films combined with the better Hollywood productions.
Renovation
Due to foundation problems and danger of subsidence of the five buildings housing the cinema, the foundation was completely renewed. During the renovation, investments were made to future-proof the four-screen cinema. For example, a modern air treatment system was installed and the halls, seats and canvases were improved.
Many classic elements of the old cinema have also been renewed: for example, a whole new carpet has been laid and the walls have been papered with brand new art deco wallpaper. So in terms of atmosphere, as little has changed as possible.
New bar
Goodbye has been said to the restaurant, but in its place, extra attention has been paid to The Movies' cafe with a new bar and atmospheric skylights have been installed.
The Movies is the oldest cinema still in operation in Amsterdam. The cinema on Haarlemmerdijk on the edge of the Jordaan was founded in 1912 under the name Bioscoop Tavenu.
Crowdfunding campaign
The main hall of the cinema, which has monumental status, was remodeled with the help of a crowdfunding campaign that raised more than 90,000 euros. Those who donated could choose, in return for example, a piece of the original carpet. During the weekend of March 11, donors of the crowdfunding campaign will be the first to get a taste of the renovated The Movies
