ARTIS: NL's oldest zoo in the heart of Amsterdam
In Amsterdam's Plantage neighborhood you will find ARTIS, the oldest zoo in the Netherlands. Founded in 1838, the zoo's facilities include an aquarium, a planetarium and a zoological museum.
ARTIS is much more than just a zoo. In the oldest zoo in the Netherlands, you will get to know 700 different animal species and as many as 200 species of trees and plants. Enjoy a walk through this beautiful park in the heart of the city while watching lions, elephants, giraffes, gorillas, seals and many other animals.
Is the weather cold or rainy? No problem. You can also visit a fantastic butterfly garden there as well as an impressive aquarium. The latter is full of exotic marine life and you can also find an exhibition focusing on the city's relationship with water.
Micropia & Groote Museum
Micropia is a science museum in Amsterdam where the public can learn about microscopic organisms. Groote Museum is the museum of big questions. Go on a personal expedition and discover similarities with humans and nature.
You'll find ARTIS within walking distance of the World Museum, Hortus Botanicus, Jewish Museum and Holocaust Museum in the Plantage neighborhood.
