REM Island: fine dining at a high level in the Houthavens

In the middle of Amsterdam's Houthavens, high above the water, lies a place where history meets modern gastronomy. REM Island is not a standard restaurant, but a destination in itself. Here everything is about experience: from the moment you climb the metal stairs to the last glass on the roof terrace.

The iconic, red-painted platform has a rich history. In the 1960s, it served as a base for pirate broadcaster TV Noordzee. Today it has been completely transformed into a unique hospitality venue, with original elements subtly woven into the interior. That combination of raw heritage and contemporary luxury gives REM Eiland a character you won't find anywhere else in Amsterdam.

The experience spans three floors: the REM bar, the restaurant and the rooftop. Each tier has its own atmosphere, but together they form one fluid overall experience. Start with a cocktail in the bar, then slide in for a refined 4- or 5-course dinner and finish with a view of the IJ on the rooftop terrace. The concept is as simple as it is powerful: anything goes, nothing must.

The kitchen is all about playful, bold style. Classic ingredients are given a modern twist and make for surprising combinations that linger. Don't expect stiff fine dining, but rather an accessible and casual setting where quality is key. Dishes like lamb with artichoke and port wine sauce or creative vegetarian options show how versatile the menu is.

“REM Island is not a restaurant you visit, but an experience that takes you along - from history to highlights, literally and figuratively.”

The bar and rooftop also deserve a moment of their own. With a panoramic view of the industrial port area and passing shipping, this is one of the most special places for a drink in the city. Whether you come for a sunny afternoon, a business meeting or a night out, REM Island adapts effortlessly.

What really sets REM Island apart is the balance between history, gastronomy and entertainment. It is not a place where you just come to eat, but where you experience a complete afternoon, evening or night - with a playful wink and a touch of adventure.
