Kwaku: From Soccer Tournament to Cultural Festival
The Kwaku Summer Festival, held in Amsterdam Southeast, began its journey in 1975 as a modest soccer tournament. The goal was to provide a fun summer for the youth of the Bijlmermeer who could not go on vacation. What began as a small event has grown into one of the largest festivals in the Netherlands, with some 300,000 visitors annually. The festival centers around culture, music, dance, and most importantly, good food.
An Abundance of Flavors
One of the main reasons visitors keep coming back is the vast array of food stalls, offering the most delicious dishes. Think exotic drinks, Surinamese spare ribs, spicy Korean tacos and an array of Asian, African, Caribbean and South American dishes. Every bite is a journey of discovery!
Pink Kwaku: A Colorful Celebration
A highlight of the festival is Pink Sunday, which takes place on the penultimate Sunday in July. This is not just any day; it is an extravagant celebration within the queer community, part of Queer & Pride Amsterdam. Everyone is welcome to enjoy a lively atmosphere together that celebrates movement and acceptance.
