Currently, Museum Jan van der Togt is dedicated to the breathtaking works of art by Spanish artist Lita Cabellut. The retrospective exhibition that every art lover must have seen runs until the end of January.
Lita Cabellut paints largest portraits for which she combines oil paint with the use of traditional fresco techniques. By then breaking the paint layer of these imposing works, the combination of chance and force creates a new image. With this, Cabellut wants to release what we can recognize and control. "As if you can break time with your own hands." The resulting image is freely created and given a new essence.
Lita Cabellut was born in 1961 in Huesca (Sariñena), where she lived on the streets until she was adopted at the age of 12 by a prominent family. She was taken to museums such as the Prado in Madrid where she came in contact with the old masters. The young Cabellut became inspired by paintings by Velázquez, Goya and Frans Hals and the many frescoes in her hometown. After her training, Cabellut had her first exhibition at the town hall of Masnou, Barçelona. Two years later - at the age of 19 - she left Spain to study at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in the Netherlands, where she still lives and works.
