Martin Parr at Foam: Vivid imagery and banal scenes

Starting Thursday, April 2, Photography Museum Foam will be completely dedicated to British photographer Martin Parr. With the exhibition Very Modern and Rather Ugly the museum presents a comprehensive tribute to one of the most influential photographers of our time. Moreover, it is Parr's first solo exhibition in a Dutch museum in more than twenty years-a rare moment for lovers of contemporary photography in Amsterdam.

In recent decades Martin Parr has developed a visual language all his own, in which humor, alienation and keen observation come together. His work focuses on the everyday, but at the same time raises it to a level that is both confrontational and recognizable. In Foam, this unique perspective is made tangible with a carefully curated selection of his most iconic series.

Central to the exhibition is Common Sense (1999), an impressive installation of as many as 270 photographs. The brightly colored, often extreme close-ups show a world dominated by consumption: from fast food and souvenirs to kitschy accessories and tourist clichés. In doing so, Parr captures not only what we buy, but more importantly why-and what that says about our identity.

Also, the series Autoportrait (2002) offers an intriguing insight. In it, Parr collected portraits of himself taken by photographers worldwide-from street photographers to photo booths. The result is a playful yet profound reflection on the versatility of portrait photography and how identity is shaped by context and style.

For those who want to return to the beginning of Parr's career, offers The Non-Conformists a rare look at his early work. In subdued black and white, he documents life in rural English communities. In contrast The Last Resort (1983-85), the colorful series with which he broke through internationally. In it, he observed British coastal life with a mix of irony and empathy-a style now inextricably linked to his name.

In addition to the photographic works, Foam also offers a reading room where visitors can delve into Parr's extensive body of photographic books. This addition makes the exhibition not only visually appealing but also rich and layered in content.

With Very Modern and Rather Ugly confirms Foam's position as a leading photography museum in Amsterdam and underscores Martin Parr's continued relevance in a world that is becoming increasingly visual and consumer-oriented.
