Dutch Theater Festival: 11 days of top performances

In early September, Amsterdam turns into one big stage. The Dutch Theatre Festival (NTF) brings together last season's most impressive performances - drama, cabaret, youth theater, mime and performance - scattered throughout the city. Eleven days long, full of quality and conversation.

The NTF runs from September 4 to 14 and lands in twelve theaters in Amsterdam. The gist is clear: what you see is a jury success. Seven independent professional juries from the Netherlands and Flanders choose the performances that touched most in craftsmanship, eloquence and impact. This makes it the shortcut to the best that could be seen last season.

The festival traditionally opens with The State of Theater, the kickoff of the new season in which creators mirror both the industry and society. This year Anne Breure and Sadettin Kırmızıyüz speaking together: two voices who know the performing arts landscape inside out and love to stir minds. Expect a sharp look at art, politics and audiences - exactly the mix that makes this evening so influential.

In addition to the opening address, NTF programs the international keynote The State of the World. Speaker Marc Bamuthi Joseph - poet, librettist and cultural strategist - connects poetry, performance and politics in a story of resistance, imagination and responsibility. A heart of content that appeals broadly to art audiences.

Together, the playgrounds form a city route: of International Theatre Amsterdam at Leidseplein to DeLaMar, Meervaart, Frascati and more. The mix of large venues and intimate stages ensures that each performance finds its ideal bed - from big talk to whispers. Popular titles sell out quickly; booking early pays off.

The final evening is for the Gala of Dutch Theatre at ITA. That's when the country's major awards are presented - including the VSCD Drama Awards (including the Theo d'Ors). A festive crowning of eleven days of excellence and a moment when the sector celebrates itself, with the public as witness.

"NTF is the shortest route to the best of the season - eleven days that recalibrate your view of theater."

What makes NTF special is the balance between watching and participating. In addition to performances, there is fringe programming that includes talks, after-shows, talent programs (NTF Pro) and exhibits - a festival that not only shows, but also context offers. You'll walk out with new favorites on your list, but more importantly with a sharper eye for what theater can and wants to be today.
