Central to the program is Empire Noir by British choreographer David Dawson. Since its premiere, the work has grown into an audience favorite that can invariably count on standing ovations. Dawson created the ballet as his first production after being appointed Associate Artist of the Dutch National Ballet. The result is an explosive choreography in which dreams, tension and human relationships merge into a visual rollercoaster full of virtuosity.

In addition, Krzysztof Pastor presents his brand new creation Refraction, developed especially for a large cast of dancers from the Dutch National Ballet. Pastor, the company's former resident choreographer and now artistic director of the National Ballet of Poland, returns to Amsterdam for his first large-scale new work since 2010. His choreographies are known for their layeredness, musicality and cinematic intensity.

Also special is the European premiere of Solitude by master choreographer Alexei Ratmansky. The Russian-Ukrainian-American choreographer is among the absolute best in contemporary ballet worldwide. With Solitude Ratmansky brings to Amsterdam a work never before seen in Europe. His collaboration with the Dutch National Ballet was further strengthened recently when, alongside Dawson, he was appointed Associate Artist of the company.

“Masters of Movement shows that contemporary ballet not only moves, but also touches, surprises and lingers long after.”

With Masters of Movement The Dutch National Ballet proves once again why Amsterdam is among the most important dance cities internationally. Three choreographers, three totally different styles and one performance in which technique, emotion and artistic innovation come together in a rare theatrical experience.
