Starting in September, the Stedelijk Museum will present a retrospective of Marlene Dumas, a unique overview of the impressive oeuvre of the Netherlands' most famous artist. The retrospective exhibition "The Image as Burden" is Dumas' first major solo exhibition in 20 years in the Netherlands and brings together nearly two hundred of her most important works from the late 1970s to the present. The exhibition takes its title from the work The Image as Burden (1993). It is a reference to the conflict between the painterly gesture and the illusion of representation.
