Liberation Festival The Free West at Westergasterrein

On May 5, Westerpark will once again transform into the setting for Liberation Festival Het Vrije Westen, the city's official Liberation Festival. A free open-air festival with full stages, a solid cultural program and activities for all ages. Everything comes together here: live music, DJ sets, spoken word, debate and a national message about freedom.

Liberation Festival The Free West is among the official Liberation Festivals in the Netherlands and is the big crowd-pleaser in Westerpark on May 5. The festival is free to attend and is all about one thing: celebrating freedom with music, stories and encounters. It ties in with the national theme of the National Celebration of Freedom, which is propagated each year through Bevrijdingsfestivals.nl.

The grounds in Westerpark will be filled with multiple stages where live bands and DJs spin all day. The lineup changes every year, but the mix remains: different music styles, quick changes between band and DJ set, complemented by spoken word and other cultural acts. In between the stages, you'll walk past information booths of civil society organizations, where current issues around freedom, democracy and living together will be addressed.

The Free West is not just a music festival. The program also includes debate and conversations, often linked to the national theme of May 4 and 5. There they zoom in on topics such as freedom in everyday life, living together in the city and the meaning of commemoration now. This combination of stage program and content makes the festival feel like a large, outdoor public talk show, with the Westerpark as the grandstand.

That combination of stage program and content makes the festival feel like a big, public outdoor talk show.

For 2026, The Free West will be extra wide-ranging. The organization will collaborate with WestWeelde, which will set up a special program in the Westerpark around nature, sustainability and community. This means that in addition to music and debate, the relationship between freedom, the environment and doing things together will also be explicitly included in the festival. Thus Het Vrije Westen remains not only a festival, but also a moment to reflect on how we shape freedom together, in the middle of the park.
