Cousin of Fred: waterfront terrace in the Baarsjes

On Jan Evertsenstraat, with your feet almost in the canal, sits De Neef van Fred. Lunch, dinner, drinks or just a late drink: it's all possible here. A café established by the Goudvisch catering group as a place for every moment of the day.

There are those terraces where you sit down and think: here I don't really need to go anywhere else. Fred's Cousin is such a place. The terrace is right on the canal, so close to the water that you can almost touch the boats passing by. Not the kind of terrace that happens to be next to a canal, but one where that water is really part of the experience.

The name refers to Fred: not a real person, but a fictional family member that everyone knows. That one cousin who is always in a good mood, who knows where the good food is, and with whom the atmosphere is always right. That idea is in the concept: informal, cozy, no-frills. The Goudvisch hospitality group, which runs several Amsterdam concepts, has established this place as an all-day café, bistro and bar in a neighborhood where that fits well.

What makes Fred's Cousin different from your average neighborhood pub is the small bar next to the terrace. Passing boats can simply moor there for a drink. Such a detail actually says everything about how the place is put together: accessible, no fuss, open to anyone who comes by. On the terrace, the sangria is a firm favorite, but the offerings run from lunch until late in the evening.

The terrace is right on the canal, so close to the water that you can almost touch the boats passing by.

The Baarsjes has changed a lot in recent years, and Jan Evertsenstraat is one of those streets where you notice it well. More places to eat and drink, more life on the streets. Fred's Cousin fits that bill, but the water terrace is something few other places in the neighborhood offer. Open seven days a week, from lunch to night: that's the waterfront terrace in the Baarsjes where you can easily spend an afternoon without regretting it.
