Comets Bread & Café is one of those places where you see what's happening right away. The bakery is just open in the space, no wall in between. While you sit with your coffee, behind the counter sourdough loaves are being shaped and croissants are being placed on the trays. You hear the kneading, see the ovens open and close, and smell fresh bread continuously.
The business began as a home project: a small sourdough bakery that ran from home and built up a steady group of fans step by step. In 2022, it was time for the next step and Kometen Brood moved to a larger bakery with café on the NDSM wharf. This made it both a neighborhood bread store and a day cafe for breakfast, brunch and coffee in one fell swoop. Owner Lard pulled through the concept: artisan sourdough, viennoiserie and a bright, uncomplicated menu.

Sourdough breads and croissants pile up on the counter; next to them are other pastries and sweet baked goods. The menu revolves around simple breakfast and lunch dishes that mainly show what the bread can do. Vegan options are clearly marked, so you can see at a glance what suits you. You can take a loaf home, or stay at a table overlooking the bakers at work.

Starting in late 2023, Kometen Brood also announced a smaller takeout counter at the Marineterrein. With this, they will move a little further into the city, while the bakery with café on the NDSM wharf will remain the base for those who want to see the full story: from dough bowl to steaming bread, just right in the middle of the business.
