The iconic Vuurtoreneiland, one of Amsterdam's most extraordinary culinary destinations, is getting a new chef. Starting in the summer of 2026, Benny Blisto - chef and owner of Restaurant Bak - will take over and become responsible for the kitchen and team at the historic island in the IJmeer.

Benny Blisto has long been considered one of Amsterdam's most progressive chefs. At Restaurant Bak in Amsterdam-North, he built a reputation with cuisine that revolves around seasonal ingredients, pure flavors and a strong connection with local producers. His philosophy: cooking with respect for the product and a keen eye for sustainability. With his arrival at Vuurtoreneiland, the restaurant gains one of the city's most respected and creative chefs.

That vision fits seamlessly with the identity of Lighthouse Island. The restaurant is known for its unique location in the middle of nature, where guests travel only by boat and where dinner is closely intertwined with the surroundings. The cuisine plays a starring role here: surprising, refined and always in dialogue with the season.

With Blisto at the helm, the culinary concept is gaining new momentum. His experience with open fire, fermentation and vegetable-focused dishes fits perfectly with the natural setting of the island. At the same time, he is known as a chef who knows how to inspire teams and give young chefs room to develop.

"With Benny Blisto at the helm, Lighthouse Island gets a chef who not only respects nature, but lets it speak for itself on the plate."

According to those involved within the team, work is already underway behind the scenes on a new culinary direction for the coming years. The focus remains on a gastronomic total experience in which nature, gastronomy and hospitality come together. Think long summer evenings with views over the IJmeer, dishes that follow the season and a cuisine that allows the location to speak even more strongly.

For Amsterdam, the arrival of Blisto marks another important development within the culinary scene. Vuurtoreneiland thus remains a place where gastronomy and experience come together - and where the city gives its most creative chefs space to tell new stories.
