The best restaurants and bars in the Poppy Corner

Most places are informal in tone but serious in cuisine. Reservations are wise at the most popular addresses, especially on weekends. The ferry to North runs year-round, day and night.

Cornerstore

Cornerstore is an East Asian-influenced gastrobar from the team behind Café Binnenvisser and Café Twee Prinsen. The walls are covered in vinyl records, there's a record player at the bar, and a DJ is always playing on Saturdays. The menu moves between Asian and European, focusing on shared dishes, complemented by a good wine list and cocktails. One of the few places in North where dinner automatically ends in a dance night. Open Wednesday through Saturday, dinner from 6 p.m. - Poppy Road 11, North

The Ceuvel

A circular incubator on a former shipyard on the Johan van Hasselt Canal, established in 2012 after winning a municipal competition. Houseboats on the site serve as workplaces for creative entrepreneurs. The Ceuvel is open to all, with a recycled wood terrace over the water, views of bobbing boats and an all-vegetable and seasonal menu. One of North's most unusual addresses, and on sunny lunch days the most pleasant place in the neighborhood. - Short Poppy Road 4, North

“The Poppy Corner is quieter and greener than the Hammer Quarter but no less serious in its cuisine. A neighborhood you only really get to know when you come there more often.” - NoordAmsterdam.nl (2025)

Semai

East African restaurant on Poppy Corner, one of North's quirkiest addresses. Semai means heaven in both Tigrinya and Amharic. The cuisine focuses on Eritrean and Ethiopian dishes, traditionally served on injera. Meat and vegetarian are both well represented. Warm in atmosphere, serious in cuisine and affordable in price. Open Tuesday through Sunday, dinner from 5 p.m.-. Poppy Corner 35, North

Bacalar

In what looks like an old garage on Chrysantenstraat: one of Amsterdam's best Mexican restaurants for years. Handmade tacos with authentic ingredients, the taco de pulpo as a classic, further ribs, tostadas with cactus or sole fish and a serious mezcal and tequila menu. At Bacalar is reservations are required and can be made up to three months in advance. Hard to get a spot, but worth it. - Chrysanthemum Street 4, North

Coffee and fresh pastries during the day, lunch with sandwiches on homemade focaccia in the afternoon, full dinner with natural wines in the evening. One of the few places in North open seven days a week, from breakfast to dinner. - Asterweg 22, North

Cafe-Restaurant-Metro

The Poppy Corner has its own character, quieter and greener than the Hammer Quarter but no less serious. Those who want to start the day go to Metro or Scrambilious. Those who want lunch in the sun are at De Ceuvel. And for an evening run-through: Cornerstore on Saturdays, Poppy when the doors open.
