The best outdoor swimming pools in Amsterdam

Amsterdam has six heated outdoor swimming pools, all owned by the municipality or under public management. They are open from roughly late April to early September, have entrance fees and offer what open water cannot: supervision, changing rooms, a terrace and water at temperature. Here are all six, plus what sets them apart from each other.

On a hot day, all six are good. The choice depends on who goes with you, how far you want to cycle and whether you want to swim laps or just lie down. Entrance at most pools is around €6 to €7 per person. Always check opening hours on the bath's website, which change seasonally and daily.

Flevoparkbad

The Flevoparkbad on the edge of the Flevopark in Oost won the 2015 election Best Outdoor Pool in the Netherlands by the Parool. It has a heated 50-meter pool for track swimmers, a shallow recreational pool with play island, a toddler pool and a large sunbathing area shaded from the park. Spacious, easily accessible by bike from virtually every neighborhood and large enough to find a lounging spot even on hot days. Open May 1 through early September, daily from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Admission €6.20 per person. - Insulindeweg 1002, East

Noorderparkbad

The Noorderparkbad in North was named the most beautiful public swimming pool in the world after its opening in 2015 at the international swimming pool fair Piscine Global in Lyon. De Architekten Cie's design is organic in form, sustainable in construction and fully incorporated into the Noorderpark. An undulating rain curtain on the outside ensures that rainwater is recycled into the pool. There are three indoor pools and three outdoor pools, including one with a wide slide that several people can go down at once. The Noorderparkbad is the only pool in Amsterdam that is open all year, including indoors. Easily accessible via metro station Noorderpark. - Floraparkweg 4, North

“With its rounded corners and organic shapes, the Noorderpark pool is the most beautiful public pool in the world.” - Piscine Global, Lyon (2015)

Bredius Pool

The Brediusbad in the Spaarndammer neighborhood is the city's most understated pool: small-scale, friendly and popular with local residents. There is a 33-by-25-meter heated pool for certified swimmers, a shallow pool for children, a paddling pool with spray fountain and a sunbathing lawn. Le Monde named it one of the most beautiful outdoor pools in the world in 2016, which has given it a notoriety that doesn't quite match its down-to-earth atmosphere. Go early on a weekday and you'll have it almost to yourself. Open daily from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. in season. Entrance €6.20. - Spaarndammerdijk 306, Westerpark

Sportplaza Mercator

The outdoor pool at Sportplaza Mercator on Jan van Galenstraat in West is a 50-meter pool surrounded by vegetated walls and roofs of the sports complex, designed by Ton Venhoeven CS. Those green walls give the pool something of a foreign pool, making it feel like an afternoon away on sunny days. In addition to the outdoor pool, there is a children's play pool with slides. The complex also has a gym, sauna and catering facilities. Open May 1 to September 1. Opening hours change daily; check website. - Jan van Galenstraat 315, West

De Mirandabad (outdoor pool)

The Mirandabad in Rivierenbuurt has a large indoor complex with wave pool and slides, as well as an outdoor pool that opens in the summer. Less well known than the indoor pool, but a good option for those in the south of the city who want to swim outside without biking far. The outdoor pool has a sunbathing area and a view of the surrounding greenbelt. Opening hours for the outdoor pool vary; check the website for the current seasonal schedule. - President Kennedylaan 2, Rivierenbuurt

Sloterparkbad (outdoor pool)

The Sloterparkbad in New West has an indoor pool that is open year-round, as well as an outdoor area that opens in the summer months with a 25-meter pool, a recreational pool and a sunbathing area with a playground. Located on the Sloterplas, which combines it with open water nearby. For those living in New West the most logical pool. Opening hours outdoor pool depending on season; check website. - Slotermeerplein 2, New West

For the best combination of architecture and facilities, go to the Noorderparkbad. For space and lane swimming in greenery, the Flevoparkbad is the strongest choice. Those seeking peace and character without crowds go to Brediusbad. And those who still prefer not to pay or sit in a pool: the previous article on open water swimming spots is still just online.
