Rooftop bar GAPP is the green escape above East

As soon as the first rays of sunshine warm Amsterdam, city life shifts en masse outside. But those who want to avoid the hustle and bustle of the center would do well to set course for Oost. Atop the striking Hotel Casa is roof garden GAPP: a lush, green oasis where the pace of the city gives way to a relaxed, local vibe.

At about 30 meters high, a surprising piece of Amsterdam is unfolding that has not yet been discovered by the masses. Roof garden GAPP has reopened after a green metamorphosis and feels like a hidden garden above the city. No sleek lounges or exaggerated design here, but an informal setting where you can settle down with friends - or rather, your gappies - for a long, sultry evening.

What makes this place special is the soul behind it. Since 1957, this has been more than just a hotel; it is a meeting place where students, local residents and travelers come together. That social idea lives on in GAPP. The name is a nod to Gabbe Scheltema, one of the initiators behind the original student house. His vision of connection and accessibility still forms the foundation of this place.

You can feel that community everywhere. From spontaneous conversations between tables to shared sunsets overlooking the skyline of Amsterdam East. The panoramic view reaches far, but the atmosphere remains surprisingly intimate. It is precisely this contrast that makes GAPP so attractive: large in view, small in feeling.

“At GAPP, Amsterdam feels like a village for a moment - but with the best view in town.”

GAPP also stays true to its roots on the culinary front. Expect a menu with local favorites such as ox sausage from Slagerij Woorts, sour from Kesbeke and fresh sourdough bread from Kometen Brood. The specially for GAPP brewed ‘Gabbe Wit’ from Oedipus Brewing underscores the local signature. And then there is the playful tradition of the ‘Lel at the bell,’ where a tug at the bell results in a serving of bitterballs for another table - a gesture that fits perfectly with the open and connecting atmosphere.

A new pergola also makes the roof garden accessible year-round, although GAPP comes alive especially during sunny days. While the city below is bustling, peace reigns above.
