Amsterdam South

Amsterdam South: museums, Vondelpark and the PC Hooftstraat

Amsterdam Now keeps track of what's on offer in Amsterdam Zuid - from the great museums on Museumplein and the restaurants in De Pijp to the luxury stores on PC Hooftstraat and the corporate Zuidas. South is the most affluent district of Amsterdam and at the same time has great internal diversity: the Museum Quarter with its international allure stands next to the bustling and popular De Pijp, and the stately Rivierenbuurt adjoins the business-oriented Zuidas. For an up-to-date list of addresses and agenda, see the amsterdam city guide on Amsterdam Now.

Museum Quarter and Museum Square

Museumplein is the cultural center of gravity of Amsterdam South. The Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum, the Stedelijk Museum and the Moco Museum are on or right next to the square - a concentration of museum institutions that has little equal in Europe. The Concertgebouw, one of the world's most renowned concert halls, is within walking distance. For current exhibitions and concerts, see amsterdam museums, amsterdam exhibits and amsterdam concerts on Amsterdam Now.

The Pipe

De Pijp is the most lively part of Amsterdam South and has its own character that differs greatly from the rest of the district. The Albert Cuyp market runs through the street of the same name six days a week and is the daily centerpiece of the neighborhood. The Ferdinand Bolstraat and Van Woustraat are the main catering streets, with a wide range of restaurants, wine bars, cafes and coffee bars. See our neighborhood page on The Pipe and our review of restaurants Amsterdam on Amsterdam Now for specific addresses.

Shopping in South

Amsterdam South has the most expensive and exclusive shopping in the city. The PC Hooftstraat is the most luxurious shopping street in the Netherlands, with international fashion houses and jewelers. The Van Baerlestraat and Beethovenstraat offer a wider assortment with more accessible brands as well. The Cornelis Schuytstraat has a character that leans more towards boutiques, coffee bars and specialty stores. For an overview of amsterdam stores and the amsterdam shopping guide, see Amsterdam Now.

Riverside

The Rivierenbuurt, south of De Pijp, is a quieter residential area built in the 1920s and 1930s in the style of the Amsterdam School. Wide streets, green squares and a relatively low tourism rate give the neighborhood its own understated character. The hospitality offerings are neighborhood-oriented - eateries, sandwich stores and neighborhood bars - and differ greatly from the more frequented parts of South. See our overview of amsterdam bars and restaurants Amsterdam on Amsterdam Now for more information.

Zuidas

The Zuidas is Amsterdam's international business center, concentrated along the A10 and Beethovenstraat. Offices of multinationals, law firms and financial institutions define the street scene during the day. The hospitality offerings in and around the Zuidas have grown significantly in recent years, with a mix of lunch and dinner establishments aimed at the business crowd. Amsterdam Zuid Station is the central public transport hub of the district, with direct connections to Schiphol Airport and the city center.
