Sasha Velour brings Travesty as a one-woman show

On May 23, 2026, the RAI Theater is all about one person: Sasha Velour. In her new drag theater production Travesty, one stage spot takes center stage, followed through time. With lip-sync, performance art and political undertones, she builds an entire world, simply in a large Dutch theater.

With Travesty, Sasha Velour brings her own drag theater production to a large Dutch venue for the first time. It is a true one-woman show: one drag artist, eighty minutes long, without intermission. No live band, but pre-recorded music and tight lip-sync, carried by theatrical lighting and staging. Everything revolves around how one place is filled with queer stories over and over again throughout the centuries.

Sasha Velour wrote and directed Travesty herself. The show follows the history of one imaginary place, but through a variety of times and worlds. For example, you see a witch burning, moments later a clown building a theater, and then an underground gay bar resisting police action. Constantly Velour changes characters, costumes and energy, while the place itself runs through the performance as an invisible protagonist.

The production is made by House of Velour, the house from which Sasha Velour sets up her larger projects. For the Dutch play, House of Velour is collaborating with organizer Greenhouse Talent. They are bringing Travesty to the RAI Theater as part of a larger European tour that will tour multiple cities in May and June 2026. So this show is not a regular production, but a touring drag theater piece that always settles into existing venues.

The production is made by House of Velour, the house from which Sasha Velour sets up her larger projects.

With Travesty, Sasha Velour emphatically joins the international queer culture that manages to fill large auditoriums. That this one-woman show is now also being played in a Dutch theater for a seated audience shows how drag has moved on from nightlife to major venues, without losing the sharp edges of the genre.
