Galeries
Amsterdam Now features galleries in Amsterdam that matter - from commercial galleries in the canal belt to experimental art spaces in Noord.
Amsterdam has a wide range of independent galleries scattered throughout the city, with new exhibitions and art events on an ongoing basis. The gallery scene in Amsterdam is thus a living part of cultural life, not only for collectors but also for anyone who wants to come into contact with contemporary art on a regular basis.
Commercial galleries
Most of Amsterdam's commercial galleries are located in the city center and the Spiegelkwartier - the area around Spiegelgracht and Nieuwe Spiegelstraat, traditionally the center of Amsterdam's art trade. Here, galleries with classical painting, antiques and contemporary art alternate. The Spiegelkwartier is compact enough to visit several galleries in an afternoon.
Contemporary art
Amsterdam's contemporary art scene has a wide range of galleries focusing on national and international work. Lumen Travo, founded in 1985, is one of the city's longest-running contemporary galleries and programs work that deals with identity, representation and current social issues. Galerie Fons Welters in the Jordaan focuses on young and experimental talent. This type of gallery usually works by appointment or with fixed opening hours around exhibition changes.
Experimental and alternative spaces
In addition to the established galleries, Amsterdam has a circuit of smaller, more experimental art spaces. Amsterdam-Noord - particularly around the NDSM terrain - has developed as a breeding ground for this type of initiative. Former industrial buildings provide space for galleries, studios and project spaces that more often work with installations, performance and interdisciplinary art.
Amsterdam Art Week
Amsterdam Art Week takes place annually in November and brings together a program of exhibitions, tours and special events. It is the time when many galleries open, change or present special programs simultaneously - a practical time to explore much of the gallery landscape in a short period of time.
Photography
Amsterdam has a remarkably strong selection of photo galleries. Reflex Amsterdam programs work by internationally renowned photographers and presents several solo and group exhibitions each year. There are also smaller galleries and project spaces that focus specifically on documentary or artistic photography.
