The Pipe

On AmsterdamNow, you'll find an overview of what to do, eat and experience in De Pijp - one of Amsterdam's most populous and diverse neighborhoods.

De Pijp is located directly south of the center, wedged between the Singelgracht, the Amstel River and the Museumplein. The neighborhood originated in the late nineteenth century as a working-class neighborhood and has since developed its own compact character that distinguishes it from surrounding neighborhoods. For a complete list of addresses and agenda, see the Amsterdam city guide on Amsterdam Now.

Albert Cuyp Market

The Albert Cuyp Market is the most visible centerpiece of De Pijp. The market runs down the street of the same name and is open six days a week - Monday through Saturday. The offerings include fresh produce, cheese, fish, flowers, clothing and a wide variety of street food. The market attracts both local residents and people from outside the neighborhood, giving De Pijp a daily rhythm that other Amsterdam neighborhoods have less of.

Hospitality

The catering offer in De Pijp is broad and internationally oriented. The Ferdinand Bolstraat and the Van Woustraat form the two main axes of entertainment, with a mix of restaurants, cafes, wine bars and cocktail bars. Cuisines from all corners of the world are represented - from Turkish and Surinamese to Japanese and Italian. Check out our overview of restaurants in Amsterdam and Amsterdam bars for specific addresses in the area.

Shopping

De Pijp has a range of independent stores concentrated in the side streets of the Albert Cuypmarkt and along Gerard Doustraat. Vintage, fashion, design and specialty stores alternate. It is not a shopping area with large chains, but a neighborhood where you store on discovery. See also our overview of Amsterdam stores for more options.

Sarphatipark

Located in the heart of De Pijp, Sarphatipark serves as the neighborhood's green lung. The park is compact but well used: during the week as a resting place, on weekends as a meeting place. Surrounding the park are some of the neighborhood's quieter cafes and restaurants.

Accessibility

De Pijp is easily accessible by metro via De Pijp station on line 52, and by streetcar via Ferdinand Bolstraat. From the center it is also easy to reach on foot or by bike. The complete overview of what to do in De Pijp can be found via the Amsterdam city guide on Amsterdam Now.
