Amour Amer: Provencal deli with French wines

On Marnix Street sits a small store that tastes like the South of France. Amour Amer combines a wine store, deli and lunch table under one roof, with no fuss. The owner is from Marseille and you can tell by everything.

Sometimes a place fits its name exactly. Amour Amer means bittersweet love, a reference to Provence as it really is: sun and shade, simplicity and character. Not a romantic cliché, but honest. And so is the store.

The owner is a Marseillais who knows what good French products are. Behind the counter is himself, and he has carefully compiled the selection. Natural and French wines, Provençal delicacies, regional products you don't just find here. The wine list is not broad for the sake of broadness, but thoughtful. Every bottle has a reason to be there.

The ground-floor space on Marnix Street is compact and raw. No shiny shelves, no sleek window displays. The aesthetic is honest and fits the concept: this is not a store that pretends to be nicer than it is. There is a lunch table where you can sit down for French specialties. During the day, it's a quiet spot in the Jordan to slow down, have a glass and eat what tastes good.

The wine list here is as serious as the products on the shelf. And that's exactly the point.

Prices are affordable, which is not a given when you're talking about quality French wines and artisanal local products. It is open Tuesday through Saturday, between ten and six. Those are ample hours for lunch or a quick stop after work to take something in. The Jordaan already has many wine bars and delis, but Amour Amer has a tone all its own. No fuss, no frills, just good stuff and someone behind the counter who knows what he's talking about. The wine list here is as serious as the products on the shelf. And that's exactly the point.
