KID Amsterdam moves to the Baarsjes with bigger kitchen story

KID Amsterdam is not just a place for coffee or dinner. Chef-owner Tomoharu Fujioka runs from morning to midnight here, with matcha and pastries by day and Asian-inspired dishes and cocktails in the evening. The business has found a new, larger spot on Frederik Hendrikplantsoen.

Tomoharu Fujioka once started KID Amsterdam on Oosterdoksstraat in the city center, but that location soon no longer suited what he envisioned. The new spot on Frederik Hendrikplantsoen gives him the space the business needed. More kitchen, more seating, and a spot in a neighborhood that actually fits it perfectly.

Fujioka previously worked as head chef at Nazka, the Peruvian restaurant in Amsterdam known for its serious approach to South American cuisine. That background, working with distinct flavors and sharp techniques, is reflected in what he does at KID. Only here it's about Asian influences, with his own twist. No static menu that stays the same season after season: the offerings evolve with what he finds interesting.

It runs from 10 a.m. to midnight, seven days a week. That sounds like a broad concept, but it doesn't feel cluttered. During the day, coffee and matcha are on the table, along with pastries and fresh baked goods. The light falls in differently, the crowds are different, the pace is different. By evening, everything shifts: the kitchen switches to dinner menus and snacks, the bar brings out cocktails and fine wines. It's one space that has two faces, and it works.

The signature dish is the fried chicken: crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside, with Asian flavors that you can't immediately identify but that make sense.

Frederik Hendrikplantsoen is a quiet square in the Baarsjes, surrounded by trees and local residents who walk past it daily. Not a tourist street, not a busy shopping route. Just the place where a business like KID can grow without screaming for attention. The larger location gives Fujioka the freedom to do what he wants to do, and it shows. KID Amsterdam is a business that has found its own pace, and that benefits everyone who sits down.
