Cafe Paper Island
Café 't Papeneiland is the oldest pub in the Netherlands. The national monument that was built in 1641 as evidenced by its facade stone is a typical Jordanian pub where it seems as if time has stood still for 100 years, the beer flows richly and the bar snacks consist of liverwurst and cheese. Paper Island enjoys worldwide fame for its homemade apple pie. Former President Bill Clinton paused during his 2011 visit to Amsterdam to sink his teeth into the delicious sweet.
Established in 1642, the Café Papeneiland' hides' in its basement an old escape route under the canal for the 'Papen' of the hideaway church the Posthoorn on Prinsengracht 7. After the alteration of 1578, Roman Catholics were no longer allowed to openly profess their faith[:].
