The Staal-Kade building on Schinkelkade is not your average hospitality venue. The building was designed in 1962 by architect Arthur Staal, the same man behind the A'DAM Tower. These are two very different buildings, but both recognizable. In 2025, the Vooges family opened Bar Staal there: an all-day restaurant with a terrace directly on the water. Not a terrace overlooking the water, but really on the Schinkel.
Behind the concept are four family members. Rolf and Mischa Vooges are the founders, their sons Daan and Tim join them. Together they run Bar Staal as a family business, something you don't often see in the Amsterdam restaurant world. The Voogeses are no newcomers to the city. On the IJ, they have been successful for years with their restaurant Vooges on the IJ. Bar Staal is their latest project, and immediately the location with the most pronounced architectural background.

The restaurant offers lunch, drinks and dinner. Just all day, with no bells and whistles. For those who want to come with a group, there are private dining options for ten to 120 people. This also makes Bar Staal suitable for corporate dinners, larger birthdays or other events where you want a little more space and privacy. Important to know: you don't have to be a member of Club-Staal to eat there. The restaurant is open to everyone, apart from the business club that is in the same building.
The terrace on the Schinkel is the most concrete argument for going there.
Bar Staal deliberately chose a different position: not in a busy catering street, but by the water, in a building that has been there for sixty years. The Vooges family did not choose the easy path. Daan and Tim Vooges are thus growing into a company that, with Bar Staal, has found a building that fits the family's ambitions: large enough for events, characterful enough to stand out.
