9x new in town in February: expos, brunch and theater

There are a number of new things to see and experience in the city again in February, with remarkably many fresh expos around Museumplein and downtown. With this itinerary, grab them in smart succession, without detours: Museumplein → H'ART → De Pijp for brunch → FOAM → Dam → Rokin → Rembrandtplein → Amsterdam-West.

Stedelijk Museum - Thanh Vo: πνεῦμα (Ἔλισσα) (from Feb. 14)

Museum Square 10, South
A new solo exhibition by Danh Vo in which he combines his own work with objects from his collection and work by others. The exhibition is all about context and connections: what you see acquires meaning through provenance, placement and the way the galleries are constructed.

Van Gogh Museum - Yellow. Beyond Van Gogh's Colour (from Feb. 13).

Museum Square 6, South
This exhibition takes the color yellow as its theme: how Van Gogh and contemporaries used that color and what yellow evoked in images during that period. Good if you already know Van Gogh, but now want to look at him through one clear angle.

H'ART Museum - American Identities: David Levinthal & Chicano Prints (from Feb. 13)

Amstel 51, Center
H'ART hereby launches a collaboration with the Smithsonian American Art Museum. The expo brings together two perspectives on American identity and imaging: photography that plays with myths, and later work that tilts the narrative through Chicano prints.

Brunch/lunch - Café Caron

Frans Halsstraat 28H, South (De Pijp)
Café Caron is a fine French bistro lunch as you walk toward De Pijp after Museumplein: classic, lively and good for a longer brunch or a quick lunch.
Lunch alternative (if you prefer pizza downtown): Pizza Beppe, Keizersgracht 465A, Amsterdam-Centrum (new location).

FOAM - Blommers & Schumm: Mid-Air (through Feb. 23)

Keizersgracht 609, Center
FOAM shows an overview of 25 years of Blommers & Schumm's work. Many images still feel contemporary through styling, humor and that fashion-like edginess - ideal if you feel like looking after the museums especially.

De Nieuwe Kerk - Mokum, the biography of Jewish Amsterdam (through April 6)

Dam 12, Center
A great urban narrative about four centuries of Jewish life in Amsterdam: how the community arose, grew, was touched by persecution, and how the story continues to the present. Especially strong because it is not one period, but "Mokum" as a whole.

Allard Pierson - Of Glass, Made in Antiquity (through March 1)

Old Turf Market 127, Center
More than 200 glass objects from antiquity, with lots of variation in color, shape and technique. A beautiful, quiet stop that shows how sophisticated and modern ancient glassware can look.

Dinner - Chez van Rijn

Rembrandtplein 17, Amsterdam Center
French brasserie on Rembrandtplein, (re)opening this winter season. Handy as a pre-theater spot because afterwards you can go straight to West.

Evening - Shrek the Musical (The Amsterdam Theater House)

Marius van Bouwdijk Bastiaansestraat 54, Amsterdam-West
English-language musical theater with play period Feb. 20-22 and Feb. 25-March 1, 2026. Airy, accessible, and fine ending to a day full of "new."
