Keti Koti means "Broken Chains" in Surinamese and stands for the abolition of slavery in the country on July 1, 1863. Since then, every year on this date we reflect together on the past and look ahead to a free future in which equality and solidarity are central.

From 11 a.m. there will be a parade from Waterlooplein towards the Oosterpark in traditional Surinamese attire, followed by a commemorative moment at the slavery monument in the park from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. After this, at 3 p.m. the festival will start and freedom will be exuberantly celebrated with stands with delicious food, drinks and various stages with live music and dance performances.
