With more than 20 photographers and over 200 works, Factor IJ presents a large-scale photography exhibition that brings together both emerging talent and established names. The unique thing about this exhibition? Everything you see can not only be admired, but also bought and borrowed. This is Factor IJ's clever response to the growing interest in art rentals and accessible art experiences - a trend that is becoming increasingly visible within the Amsterdam art scene.
The exhibition constitutes a visual journey through time. Historical milestones from 200 years of photography are subtly interwoven with contemporary work, creating an inspiring dialogue between then and now. Think of the powerful portraits of Angèle Etoundi Essamba, the narrative photography of Thana Faroq and the iconic work of Gijsbert Hanekroot. Local talent will also be given a stage, including IJburg talent representing the newest generation of photographers.

In addition to the exhibition, the festival offers a dynamic fringe program that actively engages visitors. For example, the event kicks off with an exclusive pre-sale for members on Friday, April 3, followed by a family day on April 4 where children create their own works of art. An artist talk led by NRC journalist Rianne van Dijck will take place on April 17, and on April 18 Jan Theun van Rees will delve into the history of visual illusion during an inspiring lecture.
“Photography is not just capturing a moment, but bridging the gap between past and future.”
For those who want to get started themselves, there will be Rogier Alleblas' pinhole photography workshop - a return to the essence of the medium. The month will conclude festively with a finissage on April 25.
This makes the Month of Photography at Factor IJ more than an exhibition; it is a total experience in which art, history and encounters come together in the heart of Amsterdam.
