Open Ateliers Jordaan: a peek behind creative front doors

Those who stroll through the Jordaan during the Whitsun weekend will discover a different side of the neighborhood. From Friday, May 23 to Sunday, May 25, more than 63 artists will open their studios to the public during the Open Atelier Jordaan. A cultural weekend in which art, history and the charm of the Jordaan come together.

The Open Ateliers Jordaan have now become a beloved tradition in Amsterdam. Since the founding of the Open Ateliers Jordaan Foundation in 1998, every other year artists open their doors to visitors from home and abroad. It is precisely the personal character that makes this event special. No white museum rooms or distant galleries, but direct contact with the makers themselves. You literally step into their workspace, see sketches hanging on the wall, paint on the floor and hear the stories behind the artworks.

The starting point of the route is located at Prinsengracht 122. There, visitors can pick up an overview of all participating studios and put together their own art walk. From intimate studios to impressive warehouses, each location tells its own story. It is precisely this unexpectedness that makes a trip through the Jordaan during these days so inspiring.

Traditionally, there will also be several guided tours accompanied by guides who know the neighborhood inside out. As you walk from studio to studio, you will hear stories about the history of the Jordaan, the artists who once lived here and the cultural development of this iconic Amsterdam neighborhood. The event thus offers a glimpse not only of contemporary art, but also of the character of a district that has attracted artists for generations.

“During Open Ateliers Jordaan on Pentecost weekend, you will discover not only art on the wall, but more importantly the stories, people and places behind it.”

In addition to exhibitions, there are workshops, meetings with artists and small-scale events scattered throughout the neighborhood. It makes Open Atelier Jordaan one of Amsterdam's most authentic cultural events this spring. A weekend where walking in with curiosity is exactly what it's all about.
