Miniature Museum: Amsterdam history in miniature

A new museum has been added on Museumplein: the Miniature Museum Amsterdam. No traditional, text-heavy galleries, but a continuous timeline of the city in miniature. Think carefully constructed models, short films and compact stories that together show how the city developed from medieval settlement to contemporary city life.

The new Miniature Museum Amsterdam revolves around one permanent presentation: the story of the city in miniature. The rooms are set up like a continuous timeline, so you walk through history step by step, while the models and films move with you.

The itinerary begins at early medieval settlement and grows into a trading town. The trade and colonial period is reflected in compact scenes in which ships, warehouses and busy wharves are recreated to scale. Then the timeline shifts to the Golden Age, the nineteenth century and the modern cityscape.

It is characterized by a combination of detailed miniatures, short films and concise texts. Dutch miniature artists have meticulously recreated iconic places: you will see the Dam, the Red Light District and the Vondelpark, among others, in model form. Recent urban culture is also given space, with Pride Amsterdam and even the Zaanse Schans in miniature, for example, so that you see several familiar places and moments side by side in one space.

According to recent reports on its own website and social media, the museum has actually been open on Museum Square since December 2025. At the same time, online ticket sales through its own site also began. In doing so, the Miniature Museum joins the museum offerings around the square, but with a distinct focus on the city itself: its history, iconic locations and how they carry through into everyday life today.
