CinemAsia Festival: Asian stories that connect

CinemAsia is much more than a film festival. It is a movement born out of the urgent need for visibility and representation of Asian cultures - in the Netherlands and abroad. At a time when images play a crucial role, CinemAsia offers a stage to filmmakers and stories that often remain underexposed. No stereotypes here, but layered, personal and current perspectives from both Asia and the diaspora.

For five days, Amsterdam transforms into a meeting place for cinephiles, creators and curious visitors. Eye Filmmuseum will screen impressive premieres and artistic highlights, while Rialto De Pijp and Studio/K will offer a more intimate setting for depth and dialogue. Programming is carefully curated by a team composed largely of Asian professionals - a conscious choice that contributes to authentic representation and new perspectives within the film industry.

What sets CinemAsia apart is the combination of film screenings with depth of content. Panels, talks and Q&As with filmmakers provide context and invite conversation. Themes such as identity, migration, inclusiveness and cultural pride are not shunned, but rather embraced. The festival thus acts as a bridge between different worlds, where empathy and understanding are central.

In addition, talent development plays an important role. CinemAsia offers a platform for Asian (Dutch) makers to develop and become visible within the creative sector. Workshops and training courses stimulate a new generation of storytellers and contribute to greater diversity in managerial and creative positions in the media. The festival is thus not only a celebration of cinema, but also an investment in the future.

An absolute highlight is the CinemAsia Food Festival, which takes place over the weekend at Studio/K. Here, the connecting power of food comes to life. From fragrant street food to sweet desserts and refreshing bubble tea - the food market is a feast for the senses. At Rialto De Pijp, Mireille's pop-up restaurant is serving a specially curated menu of Asian dishes, perfect for after a movie. Because in many Asian cultures, eating together is more than a meal; it is a form of love, of sharing and connecting.
