De Poldervogel serves refined comfort food in Watergraafsmeer

In Watergraafsmeer, there’s a neighborhood restaurant where familiar dishes are given that little extra something. Lisa and Bart call it refined comfort food: familiar on the plate, but prepared with care. The name refers to the neighborhood’s polder history, which was once teeming with polder birds.

Comfort food sounds like something quick and easy, but at De Poldervogel, it’s exactly the opposite. Here, it’s all about dishes you recognize, but which are served with remarkable care. No complicated compositions or baffling names on the menu, but rather the finesse you’d normally only find in a fancier restaurant. On Buys Ballotstraat, right in the heart of Watergraafsmeer, that’s exactly the idea.

Behind the restaurant are Lisa and Bart, and both have a story that fits this place perfectly. Lisa grew up in Watergraafsmeer and previously worked at Restaurant de Kas, where she developed a love for seasonal cooking. Bart, originally from Noordwijk, gained experience at Vuurtoreneiland in Durgerdam and at Reine & La Rue in Melbourne. You can taste that combination of Dutch polder cuisine and international influences in everything that comes out of the kitchen.

De Poldervogel is a neighborhood restaurant that serves refined comfort food made with seasonal, local ingredients, run by a couple who call Watergraafsmeer home.

The name De Poldervogel was not chosen by chance. Watergraafsmeer was once a polder—a low-lying area full of water and birds that made it their home. That history is woven into the concept: a restaurant that consciously sources local and seasonal ingredients, with a nod to what used to be found here. It’s a neighborhood restaurant in the truest sense of the word—a place where you walk in for the food and stay for the atmosphere.

The menu features seasonal dishes made with local ingredients whenever possible. The guiding principle is always the same: familiar, classic dishes prepared with extra care and skill. This is complemented by a wine list featuring bottles from European winemakers who are passionate about their craft—not big-name wines for show, but wines that pair well with the food and align with the restaurant’s philosophy.

De Poldervogel is a neighborhood restaurant that serves refined comfort food made with seasonal, local ingredients, run by a couple who call Watergraafsmeer home. You can see that dedication in everything: in their choice of local suppliers, in the way Lisa welcomes guests, and in the precision with which Bart crafts his dishes. It’s not a restaurant that tries to impress with gimmicks, but a place that relies on flavor and genuine care.

In a neighborhood that’s often overlooked amid the larger nightlife districts, De Poldervogel is exactly the kind of place that strengthens a community. Not because it cries out for attention, but because it simply does what it does well.
