Old South

Old South: sleek, green and culturally close

This is the AmsterdamNow city guide to Oud-Zuid: a neighborhood where everything feels just a bit more spacious. Wide streets, sturdy facades and lots of greenery that immediately makes your day more peaceful. Oud-Zuid was established in the late 19th century as a residential neighborhood for the well-to-do, and you can still see that in the streetscape - from stately avenues to facades with clear Amsterdam School influences. It's also just a convenient neighborhood: park around the corner, museums within walking distance and plenty of addresses where you'll be comfortable without the hassle.

Vondelpark: your regular getaway spot

Vondelpark is here not as an “attraction,” but as a practical backyard. Morning walks, runs, a round of coffee, or just sitting down to clear your head - it almost always works. Even when it feels crowded, you can usually find a stretch where it's quieter than you expect.

Museum Square: choose one, then it works

Around Museum Square there's a lot together, but you don't have to make it a project. The Rijksmuseum is the logical choice if you want classic and grand (and you really don't have to do “everything”). The Van Gogh Museum is more compact and intense: lots of work, lots of context, one artist. The Stedelijk Museum is best if you want modern art and design, or just something that will shift your gaze for a while.

The Concertgebouw is another kind of evening: you go there because the hall and acoustics already do half the work for you. Handy if you feel like something “neater” without being heavy.

P.C. Hooftstraat: luxury viewing or targeted shopping

The P.C. Hooftstraat is not the street where you shop every week, but it is where luxury stores are located together. Handy if you're really looking for something specific, and otherwise just a short detour if you're walking towards Museumplein anyway.

Coffee, lunch and regular addresses

Old South is strong in places where service and pace are usually in order: good coffee, good lunch and restaurants where you don't have to guess whether it will work tonight. Once you have a few regular addresses, this is one of those neighborhoods where it's easy to fall back on “this is fine.”.
