But once you've experienced it, you understand why people come back for it year after year. Eighty decorated boats depart from the Oosterdok and sail for six hours via the Nieuwe Herengracht, the Amstel and the Prinsengracht to the Westerdok. More than 500,000 people stand along the wharves, on the bridges, on each other's shoulders. The city stands still for something that is at once a celebration and a statement.<\/p>\n<p>On the boats are LGBTQIA+ organizations, activists, friends, colleagues and communities who show every year that visibility matters. The music carries over the water, the colors are overwhelming, and the atmosphere is something you don't encounter on any other day of the year in Amsterdam. That is a confluence that is not easily repeated.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>More than that one Saturday<\/h2>\n<p>The opening weekend in Vondelpark revolves around Pride Park: a Rainbow Market, Sport Pride and Youth Pride, with Elise Lodder of Junior Pride and Marco Altena of Youth Pride, among others. On July 31 and August 1, there are Street Parties in the city center. Downtown is one big outdoor event those days.<\/p>\n<p>WorldPride Amsterdam runs from July 25 to August 8. Debates, cultural events, parties and demonstrations spread throughout the city. The Canal Parade is the visual highlight, but the conversation beneath it continues throughout the two weeks.<\/p>\n<h2>This year is different<\/h2>\n<p>Thirty years is already a reason to stand still. WorldPride Amsterdam makes this something the city has never seen in this form. Amsterdam expects visitors from all over the world, people who come specifically for these two weeks. The Canal Parade on Aug. 1 will thus become not only an Amsterdam moment but an international signal.<\/p>\n<p>Plan your spot along the route ahead of time.
