On Willemsparkweg, one is treated to no less than two establishments of the popular George restaurants. At the intersection Willemsparkweg and Jacob Obrechtstraat you will find the French brasserie George W.P.A.<\/a> And a block away on the sunniest corner of Oud-Zuid, you'll slide into Le Petit George, the cozy neighborhood bistro with a terrace where the sun always seems to shine.<\/h2>\n

The UMH Group built the George brand from one burger bistro to a chain of several George restaurants on Leidsegracht, Amstel Quarter<\/a>, Timber Harbors<\/a> and the Zuidas. That has become quite an operation in a few years, with cases varying in size and approach, but all coming under the George banner.<\/p>\n

The cuisine leans on French-American bistro classics, supplemented by sandwiches and salads. No complicated menu with twelve courses and a three-line explanation for each dish. Just recognizable food in a relaxed atmosphere. The difference with George WPA is the tone: that is bigger, busier, more geared toward a broader group of visitors. Le Petit George is the quieter version. You come there for a regular spot in the neighborhood, not because you want to celebrate something special.<\/p>\n

Willemsparkweg has plenty of restaurants, but a real small neighborhood bistro wasn't really there yet. With Le Petit George, UMH Group now has two flavors on the same street: big and busy at George WPA, or small and intimate here. Whether the two can coexist without competing will become clear in the coming months. But the basics are right.
