Amsterdam Noord: NDSM, the IJ and a rapidly growing district

Amsterdam Now tracks the offerings in Amsterdam Noord - from restaurants and coffee bars along the IJ to cultural venues at the NDSM wharf and the nightlife of Shelter and Parallel. Located on the north bank of the IJ, Noord has traditionally been separated from the rest of the city by water. This geographical position has long given the district its own character - and that character has been preserved, even as Noord grows and changes rapidly. For a current list of addresses and agenda, see the amsterdam city guide on Amsterdam Now.

The IJ and Overhoeks

The IJ bank is the most visible side of Amsterdam North. Right after the free ferry from Central Station is Overhoeks, the new construction area with the A'DAM Tower, the EYE Film Museum and a cluster of cafes, bars and workplaces. The EYE programs films, exhibitions and events throughout the year. The A'DAM Tower has a vantage point, multiple hospitality concepts and one of Europe's higher swings. For current programming, see amsterdam agenda on Amsterdam Now.

NDSM Wharf

The NDSM wharf is the cultural heart of North. The former shipbuilding yard houses studios, incubators, restaurants and event venues in an industrial setting. STRAAT museum for street art and graffiti is located in the former ship's shed. Festivals, club nights and markets - including the IJ-hallen, Europe's largest flea market - make the wharf active all year round. Check out our overview of amsterdam festivals and clubs Amsterdam for current on-site programming.

Waterfront catering

The restaurant scene in Noord has grown significantly in recent years, with a concentration along the IJ River. From urban beach Pllek and the sustainable Noorderlicht to the Van der Pekbuurt with small neighborhood cafes and coffee bars - Noord has developed its own restaurant scene that stands out from the rest of the city. See also our overview of restaurants Amsterdam and amsterdam bars on Amsterdam Now for specific addresses.

Garden Villages and Rural North

Beyond the IJ bank, Noord has a very different face. The garden villages - built in the 1920s in the style of the Amsterdam School - are national protected cityscape. Districts such as the Van der Pekbuurt, the Vogelbuurt and Tuindorp Nieuwendam have a village character with low buildings, greenery and a close-knit social structure. Further north, the district changes into open polder land: Rural North, with dike villages such as Ransdorp and Zunderdorp.

Accessibility

Noord is accessible via the Noord-Zuidlijn (metro 52) with Station Noord, and via the free ferry from Central Station to Buiksloterweg, NDSM and IJplein. The ferry can also be taken by bike - for many the fastest route from the center.
