Amsterdam East: Dappermarkt, Oostelijk Havengebied and IJburg

Amsterdam Now keeps track of what's on offer in Amsterdam East - from the daily Dapper Market and the international restaurants on Javastraat to the Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ and the modern architecture of the Eastern Docklands. Oost is Amsterdam's largest city district in terms of geographical variation: from densely built nineteenth-century streets around Oosterpark to the artificial islands of IJburg in the IJmeer. Each subarea has its own scale, audience and character. For a current list of addresses and agenda, see the amsterdam city guide on Amsterdam Now.

Oud-Oost and the Dapper Market

The part of Oost closest to the center - the Oosterparkbuurt, Dapperbuurt and Transvaalbuurt - has a high population density and an internationally oriented streetscape. The Dappermarkt is the centerpiece: a daily market of nearly half a kilometer with more than 250 stalls, in operation for more than a hundred years. The offerings range from fresh produce and street food to clothing and household goods. A growing selection of cafes and restaurants can be found around Oosterpark and on Beukenplein. Check out our overview of restaurants Amsterdam and amsterdam bars for specific addresses in this part of East.

Indische Buurt and Javastraat

The Indische Buurt - with street names taken from former Dutch colonies - has one of the city's most international hospitality offerings. Javastraat is the main street, with a mix of Turkish bakeries, Surinamese restaurants, Asian eateries and newer hospitality concepts. The neighborhood has a densely populated and vibrant character that differs from the more pacified neighborhoods closer to downtown. For an overview of asian restaurants Amsterdam and other cuisines, see Amsterdam Now.

Eastern Docklands

The Eastern Docklands is one of Amsterdam's most striking urban planning projects: former harbor islands transformed in the 1990s into a residential and working area with striking architecture. KNSM Island, Java Island and Borneo-Sporenburg house residential buildings by a variety of designers alongside warehouses and studios. On the Oostelijke Handelskade are the Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ, the Bimhuis and Pakhuis de Zwijger. For more information, see amsterdam concerts and art and culture Amsterdam on Amsterdam Now.

Watergraafsmeer and Park Frankendael

Watergraafsmeer is a quieter and greener part of East, with wide streets and more family homes. Park Frankendael is Amsterdam's last remaining country estate, with a greenhouse restaurant and regular cultural events. Middenweg is the main shopping street of this subarea. See also amsterdam to do on Amsterdam Now for more activities in this part of town.

IJburg and Zeeburgereiland

IJburg is Amsterdam's newest urban district: a cluster of artificial islands in the IJmeer, a 15-minute streetcar ride from the center via line 26. The district has an open, water-rich environment with a beach, new housing developments and a growing level of amenities of its own. Zeeburgereiland is developing as a second phase, with new residential neighborhoods and an urban sports zone.
